Sixteen under par does not happen by accident
Rounds like this are never one part of the game running hot on its own. They are the rare days when every department clears the bar at the same time and nothing leaks a single shot back.
On a full length par 72 you need constant birdie looks, and that means driving the ball into position often enough that the wedges and mid irons keep firing at flags rather than fat sides of greens.
The compounding effect
Good driving shortens approach distance. Shorter approaches shrink proximity to the hole. Closer approaches turn twenty five footers into twelve footers, and twelve footers fall two to three times more often.
That is why historic low rounds look statistically strange. The putting number is enormous, but a large share of it was created several shots earlier by tee shots that never left the short grass.
